Who We Are

Meet the Family and learn the story behind Back Forty Farmstead!

The farm is located on the south side of Detlor road. Long time locals may recognize the property as “the ‘ol Mackey Farm”. Originally founded by the Smith family in 1870 was eventually sold to my (Mallory’s) grandparents, Milford and Darlene Mackey in November of 1959. Dillon and I purchased the property in November of 2019 from my uncle Gordon Mackey, on the 60th anniversary of the farm being in the Mackey Family.

Believe it or not we did not purchase the property with any intentions of farming. I fondly remember how firmly Dillon believed we would not start farming, in fact he swore this up and down to Uncle Gordon. First he bought a tractor, then some piggies… well and by that point it only made sense to get chickens…. Dill’s already out doing chores anyways right?

We have been growing our farm ever since and officially ventured into farming in 2022 with a Registered Farm Business selling pork, garden veggies at our road-side stand and pumpkins.

We added 2 farm hands to the crew along the way… Emmett & Tilly. They love growing up on the farm and we love being able to let them. We can’t say too much for their productivity level yet… maybe one day they’ll be functional gate openers like in Dill’s dreams.

If you made it this far… thank you! We appreciate you and your choice to support small local farms like ours.
